I am pretty sure my dad wishes he had a Son. I know when I would bring a boyfriend home that played hockey (for some reason all my ex's have been hockey players) my Dad would like him right away and they would talk hockey.
If I had a buck everytime I watched a hockey game with my Dad I would be rich. So many nights that my mom would already be in bed and my Dad would let me stay up and watch the double header on Hockey Night in Canada. He would always make popcorn and let me put as much butter as i wanted on…lol. He would talk to me about certain plays and tell me which players were having bad nights out there. I learned a lot from my Dad on those nights.
Even now when I date someone who is a hockey guy, they love that I know a lot about hockey, but sometimes they have issues when I know more than them. It's funny my Dad used to always tell me not to tell guys how many games I get to go to. I never really understood it until I got older. But ya I can remember one jerk I was dating, who seemed more interested in my family, and my season tickets. I guess my Dad was right. He always seems to be right.
I love sitting next to my Dad at a Leaf game. He knows the game so well and just to hear him talk about how a play develops or how a certain winger was out of position on that last goal. He knows the game in and out and seems to always know when the pace in the game changes. I watched the Team Canada World Jr game with my Dad and 5 minutes into the 2nd period my Dad said that Team Canada wasn't playing that great and Russia was coming on. I thought he was nuts. But once again he was right.
I have been around hockey my whole life. My Dad's job was all about hockey. So the best way for me to get close to him was…well Hockey. I can still remember him teaching me how to skate in the back yard or helping me with my passing. He can't really skate like he used to, with his knees shot. But over the holidays we did rent some ice with some family friends and it was nice to have him passing to me again.
I have my Dad to thank for my love affair with the game of Hockey.
Love ya, Dad
Very nice post. Take your Dad over the boy friend when ever you have tickets to the game. Years from now you will be happy you did.
